Former Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer, second left, addressed comments made by Johnny Manziel about their time together with the team in 2014.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Former Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel made headlines after comments he made on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast earlier in February. Among the things he said was a criticism of former teammate Brian Hoyer not being welcoming to Manziel when he was a rookie in 2014 (video contains explicit language).
“My quarterback room was not a home for me because of Brian Hoyer,” Manziel said. “Brian Hoyer had been waiting on an opportunity to be able to go really provide for his family, get an opportunity. And he saw how much of an upper hand he had on me, and he didn’t hold back when it came to that.
“I don’t have a bad word to say about Brian Hoyer. That is just fact about what happened in that room.”
Hoyer took the chance to respond to those comments when he was on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” on Tuesday morning.
“Johnny’s right. That was an opportunity for me to go out and be the starter of my hometown team. But I was kind of apathetic towards him I would say,” Hoyer said. “I didn’t go out of my way to be a jerk to him. In the same sense, I was trying to win this job and go out and perform the best I could. I feel sorry that he feels that way about it.
“I never had any animosity towards him. If anything, it was towards the owner (Jimmy Haslam) and the GM (Ray Farmer) who were always trying to push him ahead of me when clearly, he wasn’t ready and I was gonna be the starter.”
Manziel was the 22nd pick of the Browns in the 2014 NFL Draft. But Hoyer started the first 13 games of the season and had the Browns at 7-6 before head coach Mike Pettine benched him for Manziel in Week 15 vs. the Bengals.
Manziel started just two games for the Browns that season and played poorly, completing 51.4% of his passes for 175 yards and two interceptions.
