LPA, tropical cyclones may enter PAR in Dec

MANILA, Philippines: A low pressure area (LPA) and six other weather systems are likely to affect the country, along with one or two tropical cyclones that may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) within the month, the state-run weather agency said on Friday.

This northeast monsoon, locally known as “amihan,” is bringing overcast skies with light rains only in areas in Batanes and Babuyan Islands, according to weather specialist Robert Badrina of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

The easterlies, meanwhile, are affecting Metro Manila and the rest of the country where isolated rain showers or thunderstorms may prevail, especially in the afternoon or at night.

“We could expect another generally-fair weather. In fact, based on reports from our various stations all over the country, there was almost no rainfall during the last 24 hours,” Badrina said.

Aside from the northeast monsoon, easterlies and LPA, other weather systems that would likely affect the country this December include the inter-tropical convergence zone, frontal system, shear line and localized thunderstorms.

Rainfall forecast for the month would show that below normal conditions would be likely in most parts of Northern and Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Batangas, Cavite, Mindoro and Palawan while the near normal rainfall condition would be over the rest of the country.

Moreover, by the end of December, the state weather bureau said Cavite will likely experience drought, 18 provinces in Luzon may experience a dry spell and six others may experience dry conditions.

Generally, Pagasa said near average to warmer than average air temperatures would be likely over the country except in Romblon and General Santos where slightly cooler than average is expected.

Surges of cold temperatures may also be expected during the month, it added.
