The current cold spell is expected to last beyond the weekend
Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow weather alert for 14 counties this morning, warning that dense fog will result in dangerous driving conditions for motorists.
The weather warning was issued at 5:30am and will remain in place until 11am today, when localised patches of dense fog are expected to have cleared.
The Status Yellow alert applies to counties Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, and Roscommon.
A Yellow warning has also been issued by the UK Met Office for counties Antrim, Tyrone and Derry, where icy patches are expected to cause difficult driving conditions this morning.
The alert was issued shortly after 5:30am and will remain in place until 10am today.
Mist, fog and frost is expected to clear later today, giving way to some bright or sunny spells. Temperatures are likely to reach a high of between three and seven degrees.
Icy conditions will return tonight, however, with temperatures dropping as low as minus two degrees ahead of December 1 – officially the first day of winter.
Meanwhile, the clear skies at night are likely to give stargazers a chance to see what could be a spectacular display of the Northern Lights after a large solar flare was spotted.
Weather expert Alan O’Reilly, who operates the Carlow Weather account on X (formerly Twitter), reported that a coronal mass ejection (CME) had occurred, meaning the Aurora Borealis may be visible in Ireland towards the end of the week.
The current cold spell looks set to continue beyond the weekend, according to the latest forecast from Met Éireann.
Tomorrow will be cold but mostly dry, with sunny spells at first followed by some rain and drizzle on eastern coasts. Scattered showers will develop in Ulster and Connacht in the afternoon.
Another cold night will follow with widespread frost and possibly some icy patches as temperatures drop to as low as minus three degrees. Mist and fog are also forecast.
