The Chicago Bears traded the No. 1 overall pick to the Carolina Panthers last week in one of the biggest trades of the NFL offseason, but another team was reportedly close to acquiring the pick.
According to Jeff Howe and Tashan Reed of The Athletic, the Las Vegas Raiders declined to make a deal after hearing the Bears’ demands.
The Bears wanted the Raiders’ first and second-round picks this year, two future first-round picks and a future second-round pick in exchange for No. 1 overall. The Raiders said no, and for now still have the No. 7 pick in next month’s draft.
The Raiders were likely hoping to trade up to land a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick, but it appears plans have changed in Las Vegas. The team agreed to a deal with former 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, making him the team’s new starter.
Garoppolo could still be a bridge quarterback for a younger player that the Raiders select in the draft, but after leaving San Francisco, he will likely want to continue starting for a few more years.
The Raiders have a top ten pick and several team needs to address, so they are likely to hold on to that No. 7 overall pick.
