Lockyer says Bunker 'got it wrong'
Well, we experienced the absolute highs and lows of Australian footy overnight and the farcical bunker call overshadowing the Dolphins win over the Sea Eagles while Carlton the Melbourne played out an absolute thriller at the G Go the Backers. Let’s bring in NRL legend Darren Lockyer in Sydney and AFL senior reporter Callum Toomey in Melbourne. Guys, nice to see you. Lucky to you, first up, Fatty Wharton said. Our game is finished. JT said rugby league has died tonight after Manly were awarded a penalty for this high shot on Tom Trevoyvich. How did you see it? Oh, they got it wrong without a doubt, Carl. I think, I think that the risk the game’s got, if we’re going to penalize little taps like that, you know what I hate seeing is players lying down trying to milk penalties. I just don’t think that’s a good look for the game. And if, you know, if penalties are going to be awarded for for that sort of contact, then you’ll you’ll see players laying down and waiting for replays, waiting for a replay to try and get penalties and that’s not what we want. So I think the game, I think the bunker, you know they, I think they’ll admit they got it, got it wrong last night and they’re moving forward. They they need to allow. They need a bit more discretion about what they think’s heavy contact and what’s not, but I just don’t know in what world or universe they’re living in. If they think that is, you know, worthy of a penalty, yeah. Yeah, well look, you know, we’re all for getting head, you know, contact to the head out of the game. We all understand the the, the issues we have with concussion and we need to, you know, manage that as best we can. But there is a limit there where we are playing a contact sport. And yeah, look, that was totally wrong. It wasn’t a good look for the game.
