Top-class Tipperary restaurant is latest to close due to rising costs and staff shortages

A top class restaurant in Tipperary is to close, in the latest in a spate of restaurant closures across the Premier County.

Prime 74, located on Tipperary town’s Main Street, announced that it is closing due to operational difficulties, just days after nearby Flanagan’s Lane Restaurant and Café said it could not continue due to spiralling costs.

Owner of Prime 74, Martin Lovell, announced the bad news on Monday, January 22. “It breaks our hearts to have to share this news with you all,” said Mr Lovell. “Prime 74 will be closing its doors after eight years in business, with immediate effect.

“Along with the countless other similar cases in hospitality, we too could not sustain operations due to the never ending challenges in the sector, from rising costs to staff shortages.

“We did our best to bring something different to Tipperary Town, offering somewhere to go for a unique dining experience championing locally sourced foods and ingredients.

“We have some fantastic memories while open in Tipperary, and we hope you have too whilst dining here. It would not have been possible without our amazing local suppliers, customers and all the wonderful staff who have been with us throughout the years. We know it was a special place for so many to gather with friends and family.

“Please continue to support local businesses in the town during these challenging times, hoping for brighter days ahead. From myself and all the staff of Prime 74, wishing everyone the best,” added Mr Lovell.

Sinn Féin Cllr Annemarie Ryan Shiner said it is “terrible news.” “Loic and I completely understand this difficult decision,” said Cllr Ryan.

“We have loved all our meals in your restaurant Martin and thank you for the wonderful food and service. Prime 74 was such a positive addition to Tipperary town. Wishing you and the staff the very best for the future.”

Councillor Ryan recently announced her own retirement from the popular French Quarter Café in Tipperary town after 18 years. The cafe will continue to trade as the French Quarter Cafe, with the same staff, under the care of Tipperary Excel Heritage Centre.
