Downtown Des Moines Walgreens will close in February
A Walgreens store in downtown Des Moines is closing after 30 years in operation, company officials confirmed with Local 5 on Friday.
The drugstore chain, located at 606 Walnut Street and conveniently accessible by the skywalk, will shutter its doors on Feb. 26, 2024. That’s three decades after it first opened in February 1994.
The reason for the closure has not been disclosed yet, but a Walgreens spokesperson told Local 5 multiple factors went into the decision to shut down the storefront.
The statement reads in part:
“When faced with the difficult decision to close a location, several factors are taken into account, including our existing footprint of stores, dynamics of the local market, and changes in the buying habits of our patients and customers, among other reasons.”
For downtown residents or corporate commuters, this closure will leave a gap in the heart of Des Moines: The closest Walgreens locations for downtown residents or commuters are an average eight-minute drive from the Walnut shop’s current footprint.
Your other downtown-adjacent Walgreens options are located at 3501 Ingersoll Ave., 3030 University Ave. and 3140 SE 14th St.
It’s not confirmed what will replace the Walgreens once it’s closed.
