Overview

Infection of the large intestine (colon) caused by the bacteria Clostridium difficile. Long-term use of antibiotics reduces the normal bacterial population in the intestine and triggers the C. difficile overgrowth in the intestine.

Symptoms

Symptoms range from mild diarrhea to severe inflammation of the colon, resulting in fever, loss of appetite, nausea and abdominal pain.

Causes

Clostridium difficile exists in soil, air, water, human and animal feces. Clostridium difficile spreads through direct contact and through fecal-oral route.
