Fourteen Philippine universities appear in the 2024 Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings (THE AUR), a testament to local higher education institutions’ continuous improvement and recognition. Leading the pack are five universities that have secured official rankings on the list: Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University (DLSU), University of the Philippines (UP), Mapua University, and the University of Santo Tomas (UST).

The number of local higher education institutions (HEIs) appearing on THE AUR improved to 14, up from 10 in last year’s edition released by the United Kingdom-based education magazine.

The UST debut on the list brings the number of officially ranked Philippine universities to five.

Additionally, nine other Philippine universities on “Reporter” status are actively participating in the rankings despite not yet having earned a ranked position, demonstrating their commitment to academic excellence.

Here’s how the 14 Philippine universities fared on the new rankings:

Ateneo de Manila University maintained its leadership in THE Rankings in the Philippines since it debuted at the top of the local rankings last year. The Jesuit educational institution kept its leadership position despite sliding from the 84th spot to the 401-500 bracket and losing its place in Asia’s Top 100.

The University of the Philippines also moved down a few brackets, from 201-250 to 501-600. UP ranked for the eighth time this year. The state-run UP System with 8 constituent universities in 17 campuses across the country was in the Top 100 for three straight years from 2019-2021, before sliding down to the 129th spot in the 2022 edition.

De La Salle University kept its previous place in the 501-600 bracket. The Lasallian Brothers-administered private university in Manila has been included six times since it debuted in the 2019 rankings.

Mapua University, a private university, also maintained its debut ranking last year in the 601+ bracket.

The University of Santo Tomas, administered by the Order of Preachers, debuts in THE Asia rankings, landing in the 601+ bracket this year, moving up from “Reporter” status.

The 9 universities in the Philippines still on “reporter” status are:

  • Cebu Technological University
  • Central Luzon State University
  • Mariano Marcos State University
  • Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology
  • Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology
  • Tarlac Agricultural University
  • University of Eastern Philippines
  • University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines
  • Visayas State University

All 14 local higher education institutions on the latest THE AUR appeared together on the 2024 THE World University Rankings released in September last year.

THE AUR Coverage

The 2024 THE Asia University Rankings include 739 universities from 31 territories.

The 12th edition of THE Asia University Rankings evaluated universities across various criteria including research quality (30%), research environment (28%), teaching (24.5%), industry (10%), and international outlook (7.5%).

The recent inclusion of new metrics such as research quality and patents is only the second time the methodology has been significantly updated since the World University Rankings were launched 20 years ago.

THE explained in its new addition to the methodology: “The extent to which universities are supporting their national economies through technology transfer is an area that deserves greater recognition. The patents metric, introduced in 2023, is defined as the number of patents from any source that cites research conducted by the university,” THE said.

THE also introduced “research environment” and “research quality” as new categories for “research” and “citations,” based on last year’s rankings. Specifically, THE expanded its citations category to include new research quality measures, such as research strength, research excellence, and research influence.

“Our revised and improved methodology – which includes new metrics relating to research quality and patents – highlights performance that was not completely visible in the previous ranking,” THE stated in its announcement of the rankings on April 30.

The Philippines’ presence in the rankings highlights its universities’ academic prowess and underscores their role in contributing to the nation’s development and global knowledge exchange.

As the landscape of higher education continues to evolve, the achievements of Philippine universities in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings serve as a testament to their dedication to excellence and contribution to the global academic community.
