Lisa McCune, 52, set to play a 104-year-old grandmother in shock new role: 'I want to work'

Australian actress Lisa McCune, 52, might seem relatively young to portray a grandmother.

But in ABC ME’s latest children’s show Planet Lulin, the television star assumes the role of an alien who is twice her actual age.

‘It’s my first grandmother role and I’m embracing it. It feels kind of right,’ McCune told TV Tonight.

‘I’m happy to play it. If I like something, I don’t worry about that stuff, really. I mean, I’m worried only from the perspective that I want to work.’

Planet Lulin revolves around Lulin, a sixth-grade student who is also half human and half alien hailing from the planet Astorad.

Her latent powers are surfacing, marking her as a unique individual.

However, intergalactic invaders known as the Megaheads are relentlessly pursuing her with the intent to exile her to ‘the Void.’

Written by Melanie Sano, the series merges live-action sequences with elements of fantasy and animation, and focuses on themes of family, science, and imagination.

Ezmealso  assumes the role of the mother-in-law to Ken, a human father played by Kevin Hofbauer.

Prior to her involvement in Planet Lulin (previously known as F.A.N.G.), McCune collaborated with producers on various projects like Blue Heelers and How to Stay Married.

But her new role represents her first venture into the realm of children’s television.

The roster of child actors in Planet Lulin includes Uma Dumais, Max Turner, Cassie Robb, and Carlee Clements.

Alongside them, the adult cast features notable talents such as Zachary Ruane, Don Bridges, Carissa Lee, Virginia Gay, and Marta Kaczmarek.

Lisa landed her breakout role as Const. Margaret ‘Maggie’ Doyle on police drama Blue Heelers from 1994 to 2004.

Despite being one of Australia’s biggest TV stars in the late ’90s and early 2000s, she has kept a comparatively low profile in recent years.

Lisa’s decision to step away from the spotlight came after photos were published in 2012 of her kissing New Zealand opera singer Teddy Tahu Rhodes, her co-star in the stage production of the musical South Pacific.

At the time the kiss made headlines, it was reported that Lisa was still married to her husband, Tim Disney, with whom she shares three children.

In an interview with Stellar magazine, Lisa spoke about why she has started keeping her private life out of the public eye.

She explained: ‘Over the last couple of years I made a decision that while my kids are teenagers – and I feel really strongly about this – my story affects their stories.

‘So until they get to a point where they are living their own lives, I have decided to be very quiet about mine.’

Lisa married husband Tim in 2000, and the two went on to have children Archer, 22, Oliver, 20, and Remy, 18.
