John Moseley, the President of Lincoln University in Missouri, has been placed on paid leave following senior administrator Antoinette “Bonnie” Candia-Bailey’s death. Students and alumni called for the removal of Moseley after Candia-Bailey died by suicide Monday. In a news release Friday, the university’s board of curators said Moseley was placed on paid leave as third party reviewed personnel issues and concerns about mental health in connection with Candia-Bailey’s death.

“As a Board, we are committed to make certain the mental health of Lincoln University employees is a priority and that every employee is always treated with dignity and respect,” board President Victor Pasley said.

“The Board has confidence in the leadership team we have at Lincoln, but as we all work together to serve students and the Lincoln University community, this review will fully examine important questions, concerns and gather facts. Dr. Moseley agrees those issues should be examined and has volunteered to go on leave during the review so that it can move forward in a fully independent way.”

HBCU Buzz, citing Candia-Bailey’s family sources, reported that she died by suicide on January 8 due to distress from “bullying and severe mistreatment” in her role at the university.

Her mother and husband told NBC News that the 49-year-old had been terminated by Moseley on January 3. She had started in the role May 1.

The school, however, referred to her as a “beloved alum and leader” in a Facebook post announcing her death.

“The Lincoln University community is mourning the loss of beloved alum and leader Dr. Antoinette “Bonnie” Candia-Bailey. Dr. Bailey passed away earlier this week. She was a gifted colleague and always a passionate advocate for Lincoln University, HBCUs and other causes in which she believed. Dr. Bailey had many friends in the Lincoln University community. As a Blue Tiger community, we grieve with them and send our deepest condolences to Dr. Bailey’s family,” the university said.

Lincoln University students alums have been using #FireMoseley hashtag to help spread awareness.

“Rallying for justice and change! Dr. Antoinette Bonnie Candia-Bailey’s tragic loss to suicide calls us to action,” said Alexis Anginette Wells, a Lincoln U alumni, on Instagram. “Join us in solidarity with Lincoln University of Missouri to demand accountability and stand against the silence surrounding mental health and bullying.
