Limerick’s Peter Casey ruled out for rest of the campaign after scans reveals broken ankle that needs surgery

Limerick GAA have confirmed the nature of the injury that is set to rule Peter Casey out of the remainder of their Munster and All-Ireland campaign.

Casey was injured in the act of scoring the Treaty’s second goal during the Munster SHC round two win over Tipperary at the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday.

The statement reads: “In the latter stages of the Limerick Vs Tipperary Munster Senior Hurling Championship fixture yesterday, Peter Casey picked up an injury which forced him to leave the field. Following a scan we can confirm that Peter suffered a broken ankle which will require surgery in the coming days.

“[The] Management team want to wish Peter all the best in his recovery and we will ensure that he receives the best possible care over the coming weeks and beyond as he begins, the journey to full recovery and resumption of his playing career.

“We would also like to thank our own Senior Hurling Medical team, the Tipperary Senior Hurling Medical team, the Stadium Medics, the Doctors and Staff at UHL for the care provided to Peter.”

Speaking after the game manager John Kiely said there was “huge devastation for Peter”.

“Peter has come back from a serious injury before and come back very strong. I have no doubt that Peter has the capacity to do that again,” said John, who said Peter is an “incredible talent”.

Casey, 27, suffered an ACL injury during Limerick’s 2021 All-Ireland victory over Cork and missed almost an entire year. He recovered to become one of the game’s most versatile forwards, winning the Sunday Game’s Man of the Match award in the 2023 All-Ireland decider.
