Popular budget supermarket chain Lidl has announced a third pay rise in the past 12 months for staff paid on an hourly basis.
This will see any Lidl workers paid an hourly wage receive a minimum of £12.40 across the country, rising from the brand’s previous rate of £12.
In London, colleagues will see entry level pay rise to £13.65, up from £13.55, with the higher amount being due to the London Living Wage.
The new base rate meets an industry-leading benchmark, as it will equal the best hourly pay in the sector.
The latest move represents an investment of over £2.5million, following a £37million investment in March 2024, as well as an £8million raise in September 2023, bringing the total investment in pay over the past 12 months to nearly £50million.

Since opening its first UK store in 1994, the budget-friendly supermarket now has 960 outlets, with over 32,000 employees across Britain.
Lidl’s hourly pay rates for colleagues also increase with length of service, with pay reaching £13.00 nationally and £14.00 within London.
These top rates are the highest hourly pay amounts in the industry.
The investment follows record trading and market share gains over the Spring period, with Lidl’s market share now standing at a record 8%.

The pay rise for Lidl staff comes after Asda announced it will invest £150million into giving more than 120,000 staff an 8.4% pay rise.
Asda revealed it would increase basic pay for retail workers to £12.04 per hour later this year, with those at stores inside the M25 receiving £13.21

The move by Asda follows an increase in the national minimum wage from £10.42 to £11.44, which came into force on April 1.

‘We want to be a company that people are proud to work for, which is why we are proposing increasing pay for retail and Express colleagues by more than 8% this year.’
