Civil servant charged with cheating Socso to obtain child dependency benefits

KOTA KINABALU: A civil servant has claimed trial to a charge of cheating the Social Security Organisation (Socso) to get dependent benefits for two of his children five years ago.

Muhamad Rajis Muhid, 38, pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court judge Jason Juga to the charge under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

The enforcement officer with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department in Tawau was accused of providing false information to the Tawau Socso manager on March 27, 2019 by alleging his two children were living with him to obtain dependent benefits of RM9.10 a day for each of his children.

As such, he was accused of giving false statements under Section 12C (2) and (3) of the Employees Social Security Act 1969.

Jugah allowed Muhamad bail of RM10,000 with one surety and ordered him to surrender his passport and report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office, once every two months.

The court set March 26 for case management.

Morsham Saharom led the prosecution for the MACC while Muhamad was unrepresented.
