Liam Scales stakes his Celtic claim as debut goal has Irish rising star dreaming of regular place

Liam Scales admitted his phone was red hot after opening his Celtic account – but he’s hoping to get the call from Ange Postecoglou for Thursday.

The former Shamrock Rovers defender notched his first goal for the Hoops after coming off the bench in the 3-0 demolition of Dundee United.

Scales has been forced to be patient since his summer switch but the door could be open against Real Betis this week in the Europa League as Ange Postecoglou gets set to give some of his fringe men a chance to impress.

The Irish full back made the most of his opportunity at Tannadice and his friends and family were going wild after his strike.

Scales said: “Unfortunately they couldn’t make it over but my phone was hopping, I was all the way back to Glasgow replying to messages.

“It’s great, I’m delighted.

“As a defender you don’t get many chances to run on to the perfect ball on the edge of the box.

“I was just thinking, ‘shoot’ – thank god it went in!

“It just sat up perfectly for me. I was running at speed so it was just a case of directing it on target.

“I was buzzing it went in. It was a great feeling doing it right in front of the fans.

“I just kept running towards them.

“The reception I got was great, I was delighted.”

Scales is bang in the frame for a start this week and he said: “Hopefully that’s the case. December is a busy month so there will be changes and chances for everyone.

“I did my best out there today.”

“It’s a massive month for us as a team and we are all in it together to make a proper push and hopefully collect as many points as we can.

“I obviously want to be a part of that.”

Scales has had to bide his time but he’s finally finding his feet at the club.

He said: “It’s a step up coming to Scotland, especially at Celtic where the physical and technical demands are so high.

“I’m learning every day and it’s so enjoyable.

“The standard of the squad, it’s going to be difficult to get chances regularly. There are only 11 spots on the pitch.

“I can only do my best when I get my chance and I was happy with how it went today.”

Scales had been given a crash course in Posrteocoglou’s system – and he’s hoping having a gaffer who was a full back can help – even if the boss admitted he hated the role.

He said: “I suppose that’s probably one of the main reasons why he uses this system.

“I think I heard somewhere that he was bored playing out wide! So, he knows exactly what he wants from us and he puts his points across very clearly.

“It’s a different system to what I was playing before, and I suppose it’s a new system for most players here.

“It did take a few weeks at the start of the season for the manager to get his tactics across, but I think everyone has bought into it and are up to speed with it now.

“I like it and I just do as much as I can.”
