Lily Gladstone Makes History — and Champions 'Visibility' — with “Killers of the Flower Moon” SAG Win

Annette Bening, Lily Gladstone, Carey Mulligan, Margot Robbie and Emma Stone were all nominated in the top female acting category for film

Lily Gladstone continues to make history!

The Killers of the Flower Moon star, 37, was named the winner in the outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role category at Saturday’s SAG Awards 2024 in Los Angeles. She is the first-ever Indigenous performer to land a SAG Award in that category.

Also nominated were Annette Bening for Nyad, Carey Mulligan for Maestro, Margot Robbie for Barbieand Emma Stone for Poor Things.

“My friends, fellow actors, I feel the good in what you have done — what you do,” Gladstone began the English portion of her speech, after speaking briefly in her native Blackfoot language. “This has been a hard year for all of us. Those in this room, those not in this room, I’m so proud that we have gotten here in solidarity with all of our other unions.”

“It’s truly a gift that we get to do this for a living. That’s the win. It was getting to be here, it was getting to be on set. It was getting to tell stories,” she continued, in part. “It’s so easy to distance ourselves. It’s so easy to close off, to stop feeling, and we all bravely keep feeling, and that humanizes people. That brings people out of the shadows; it brings visibility.”

“Keep telling stories to everybody in this room, to everybody watching abroad. Those of you who are not actors but have a voice, have a story that needs to be heard,” she added. “Thank you for all of the compassionate souls in this room and all of the storytellers here tonight. Keep speaking your truths, and keep speaking up for each other.”

Gladstone emerged as the breakout star from Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon as Osage woman Mollie Kyle, the wife of Ernest Burkhart (played by Leonardo DiCaprio). The film tells the story of the Osage murders at the hands of crime boss William Hale (portrayed by Robert De Niro).

This year, the actress was the first Native American woman to win a Golden Globe, delivering her acceptance speech in her native Blackfoot language. She has also earned a nomination at the Critics Choice Awards and became the first Native American to be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars. Gladstone the fourth Indigenous actress to ever earn a nomination in the category.

Mollie is based on a real-life woman who was a member of the Osage Nation. Her family members, including her mother and sisters, were killed by men over their rights to oil reserves located underneath their reservation in Oklahoma. The movie can be streamed on Apple TV+.

Flower Moon was in contention for three SAG categories total, including De Niro, 80, for supporting actor and the ensemble for outstanding performance by a cast.

In Nyad, Gladstone’s fellow nominee Bening, 65, plays real-life swimmer Diana Nyad in her attempts to make the 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida.

Critics praised both Bening and costar Jodie Foster, who plays Diana’s coach Bonnie Stoll, for driving the film and bringing Nyad’s story to life.

A four-time SAG Award nominee, Bening last won at the show in 1999 for American Beauty. Throughout the 2024 award season, the actress has received nods at the Golden Globes and Oscars.

Alongside Bening, Foster, 61, was up for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role. (Da’Vine Joy Randolph took home the trophy, for her role in The Holdovers.)

Two-time SAG nominee Mulligan, 38, nabbed another nomination for her role as actress Felicia Montealegre, the wife of composer Leonard Bernstein (played by Bradley Cooper, who also directed and co-wrote the film).

Mulligan’s performance as Montealegre notched her Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics Choice and Oscar nominations.

She was previously nominated at the SAG Awards for her 2008 role in An Education and 2020’s Promising Young Woman.

Her Maestro counterpart Cooper, 49, was also nominated for outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role.

Barbie landed Robbie, 33, her fourth SAG nomination. She starred as the titular iconic Mattel doll, spearheading the film as lead actress and a producer to box office and critical success.

Robbie received BAFTA, Golden Globe and Critics Choice nods for best actress. Her prior SAG nominations came for 2017’s I, Tonya, 2018’s Mary Queen of Scots and 2019’s Bombshell.

At this year’s ceremony, Barbie leads the pack with four nominations, tied with Oppenheimer. Costar Ryan Gosling was up for supporting actor, while the film’s stacked roster contended for outstanding performance by a cast and outstanding performance by a stunt ensemble.

With Poor Things, Stone, 35, lands her fourth SAG Award win.

In the Yorgos Lanthimos-directed film, Stone’s Bella is a woman given a clean slate via an experimental procedure from a mad scientist. After which, she gradually discovers the wonders — and dangers — of the world. Her costars include Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe.

Stone’s standout performance has already won her a Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Award and BAFTA Award, and landed her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. She last took home a SAG Award statuette for her leading role in 2016’s La La Land.

The 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards streamed live on Netflix Saturday, Feb. 24, at 8 p.m. ET, from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles.
