Liverpool fans make same point to Ian Wright after Bukayo Saka penalty dive

A late penalty shout in Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich led Liverpool fans to bring up Ian Wright’s old comments on Tuesday night.

Arsenal drew 2-2 at home against Bayern, setting up an exciting second leg in Germany next week.

The delicately poised tie is good news for Liverpool, with the Gunners facing further potential distraction away from the Premier League title race.

After going a goal ahead early on at the Emirates through Bukayo Saka, Mikel Arteta’s side soon found themselves trailing to goals from Serge Gnabry and a Harry Kane penalty.

They pulled it back in the second half through Leandro Trossard’s equaliser and might’ve gone to Munich ahead had they been awarded a very late penalty.

The Gunners initially looked hard done by when Saka went over one on one with Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer deep into stoppage time, but referee Glenn Nyberg wasn’t interested VAR did not intervene.

Replays appeared to show that the England international had thrown his leg into Neuer to initiate contact.

The moment involving Arsenal’s ‘starboy’ led plenty of Liverpool fans to get out the receipts on Gunners legend Wright’s comments about Diogo Jota back in January.

After Jota rounded the keeper and went down under contact to earn a late penalty in Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Newcastle on New Year’s Day, Wright posted: “Would rather go down for a penalty than put the ball in an empty net! Seen it all!”

That unfair characterisation of Jota as a diver was quickly brought back to haunt Wrighty on Tuesday…

To be fair to Wright, he is consistent in his views and posted after the game that he thought the controversial Saka incident was ‘not a pen’.

Arsenal’s current players, however, were left incensed by the decision at full time, surrounding referee Nyberg.

Speaking after the game, TNT pundit and former Arsenal man Martin Keown was not in agreement with Wright, saying: “Wow. I thought it was a penalty. I thought the referee had a good game.

“There is a suspicion that Saka puts his foot towards the ball, but the movement from the goalkeeper, Neuer is actually going towards that ball and comes out and makes the challenge. For me that is a penalty all day long.”

More surprisingly, Bayern manager Tuchel also admitted the decision could have gone the other way: “Given the performance of the referee today, I would have not been surprised if he whistled for it.”
