Letters, June 8: Edmonton needs to deal with homeless encampments

letters, june 8: edmonton needs to deal with homeless encampments

Homeless encampments on 96 Street near 102A Avenue in Edmonton on April 17, 2023.

I am so tired of the homeless encampments that take over the streets. I’m referencing one place in particular on 105 A Avenue between 96 Street and West toward 97 Street. The people who try to park there and have been for years are being forced to find other places. The businesses as well are also in a bind.  Also, they are being given welfare? Give it to people who pay rent.

Terry Hamilton

(Why should their living situation make them ineligible for government support?)

Unused bike lanes

Why do we have bike lanes? For the third time this spring I have nearly been run over by a cyclist on the sidewalk, while there was a perfectly usable bike lane right there. Almost all of the cyclists in my neighbourhood still use the sidewalk anyway. And many of them say when you remind them it is a sideWALK, they flip you the bird. Nice use of taxpayer dollars, council. Backed up traffic in one lane and cyclists who don’t care.

Paul McKay

(Sounds like you have some very rude cyclists in your ‘hood.)

Time for action

The longer Trudeau, Singh and Johnston drag out these injustices to Canadian democracy, the Chinese community, politicians the more dangerous it all becomes! China is controlling Canada, yet Trudeau, Singh, Johnston do not care. Canada is broken and falling apart. Canada is like an injured animal waiting for the predator to pounce. Even worse, Canada does not have a way to stop these abuses.

Tobin McCartney

(There are many ways things can be fixed; it will just take leadership at a federal level.)

Move beyond smokes

Why does the government waste time printing more warnings on cigarettes? Was it not enough to put the warning pictures on the cartons? They should move on to more greener pastures, by expanding the labels to cover fast food. Thousands of Canadians lose their lives to heart disease and obesity because food corporations have engineered junk food to be as addictive as possible to maximize their profits. All this at the expense of our health care system. And then they market it to children. It’s absolutely callous.

Trudy Odergard

(Unhealthy food will likely be next up, don’t worry!)

Don’t forget to vote in our daily poll!
