Le leader du parti de l’opposition DA, John Steenhuisen, a persisté et signé après le spot publicitaire de son parti, qui a provoqué un tollé. Ici, lors d’un meeting à Pretoria, le 17 février 2024.

Alors que les élections générales sud-africaines du 29 mai se rapprochent, un clip de campagne crée la polémique. Réalisé par le premier parti d’opposition, l’Alliance Démocratique, il utilise l’image d’un drapeau sud-africain en train de se consumer à petit feu, pour illustrer à quel point une coalition entre l’ANC, au pouvoir depuis 30 ans, et d’autres partis radicaux entrainerait le pays dans le chaos. Mais pour certains, c’est un symbole sacré qui est attaqué.

Pour l’Alliance démocratique (DA), cette vidéo rentre complètement dans sa stratégie de communication qui vise à susciter, en cette fin de campagne, la peur autour d’une coalition qu’elle prédit entre l’ANC au pouvoir, l’EFF de Julius Malema et le MK de l’ex-président Jacob Zuma. Une telle alliance réduirait le pays en cendre, selon le parti de centre-droit, rapporte notre correspondante à Johannesburg, Claire Bargelès.

La DA considère être le seul parti à pouvoir éviter cette « apocalypse », selon ses mots, et à rétablir l’intégrité du drapeau sud-africain. Soit comme on le voit à la fin de la vidéo.

Un clip qui a fait parler de lui. Des réactions allant du ministre de la Culture – qui parle d’un geste « anti patriotique » et « odieux », contre lequel il envisage des mesures – à l’ancienne médiatrice de la République très respectée, Thuli Madonsela. Même le président Cyril Ramaphosa s’est joint au concert de critiques, évoquant une « trahison » : il a regretté de voir maltraité un symbole d’« unité » nationale, qui rassemble la société post-apartheid.

Malgré le tollé, le chef de file de la DA, Johan Steenhuisen, a défendu mardi 7 mai le spot de campagne : « Nous pouvons empêcher notre beau drapeau de brûler et nous pouvons empêcher l’apocalypse, mais seulement si nous votons par millions pour la DA », a-t-il déclaré lors d’une conférence du parti.

La DA n’a toutefois, jusqu’à présent, jamais tout à fait écarté la possibilité de rejoindre l’ANC au sein d’un gouvernement de coalition si l’occasion se présentait. Mais cela sans les autres partis.
