Leclerc gets penalty for new Ferrari engine and starts in Russia at the back

Leclerc gets penalty for new Ferrari engine and starts in Russia at the back

Leclerc has so far accumulated 104 points this season and is therefore in sixth place in the World Cup standings. Two weeks ago at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Leclerc finished fourth.

Ferrari is introducing a new hybrid system in the car in Sochi, something the Italian racing stable announced a few weeks ago. “The main goal is to gain experience with this for next year,” said Ferrari. “We are going to introduce this system to our drivers in a staggered manner.” Leclerc will have access to the new hybrid system in Russia, in combination with a new engine. His Spanish teammate Carlos Sainz has to wait a little longer for that.

Max Verstappen, the leader in the World Cup position, also has to take a grid penalty in Sochi. The Red Bull leader will be put three places back on the grid after qualifying, because he has been identified as the main culprit for the collision with Lewis Hamilton at Monza.
