ireland weather: status yellow rain warning issued for two counties as showers intensify

Rainfall and chilly temperatures are doing the rounds this week

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow rain warning for counties Cork and Kerry as heavy falls are expected between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

The warning comes ahead of forecasts of the return of chilly temperatures and snow which the national forecaster has said will fall overnight on Wednesday and Thursday, continuing into Friday.

A spokesperson for the forecaster wrote this morning: “Tonight and for a time on Wednesday morning, there will be heavy rain at higher elevations in Kerry and west Cork.”

The warning will come into effect from 10pm tonight and is valid until Wednesday morning at 8am.

In the meantime, scattered showers are forecast today – falling mainly in the west and north of the country. Strong gusts are also expected along the western coast, and rainfall will increase overnight.

Some heavy rain is also expected tomorrow along with windy conditions before temperatures drop and the first signs of sleet and snow appear on Wednesday night.

For most of the country, tonight will be mainly dry for a time, but rain will spread from the southwest overnight, becoming heavy at times. Becoming rather windy too with southerly winds increasing fresh to strong and gusty. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 7 degrees early in the night, coolest in the north.

Widespread rain at first will clear eastwards to showers. Breezy with fresh to strong and gusty southwesterly winds will veer westerly with the clearance of the rain introducing much colder weather. Highest temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees.
