lodge report on errant traders directly to department, consumers told

Lilis Saslinda, who is seen here checking dried chillies at a hypermarket in Johor Baru, says errant traders will be warned first before action is taken against them.

JOHOR Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry wants the public to complain about errant traders to the department rather than taking it to the social media.

Its director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo said it would be difficult for them to trace and investigate complaints that go viral.

“The ministry is committed to check every complaint lodged using the proper channels. We need cooperation from the public,” she said after launching the state level price control list scheme held in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri at a hypermarket in Kempas, Johor Baru.

Lilis Saslinda said local traders in the state were aware of the law and made sure prices of goods remained affordable.

“However, there are isolated cases involving traders. The ministry will issue them a warning first and if they repeat the offence, we will compound them or open an investigation paper.

“As for consumers, we ask for their cooperation in not spreading it on social media, but instead come to the ministry, make a complaint directly and we will take action.”

Lilis Saslinda added that the ministry also ran an advocacy programme to create awareness among the public involving price tags and controlled items.

“The advocacy programme will continue throughout this year.

On the event, Lilis Saslinda said the price control list for Hari Raya Aidilfitri would take effect for 15 days, between April 5 and April 19.

“A total of 22 essential items for Hari Raya Aidilfitri had been identified.

“In this year’s list were local beef, imported buffalo meat, imported beef, tomatoes, red chillies, imported round cabbage, long beans, imported red onions among many more,” she said.
