Green Light: Squid Game: Challenge Is On Netflix

(SPOT.ph) Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge will be available today, but with a twist. The new series will blend the lines between fiction and reality in the form of IRL-ish game.

As a reality adaptation of the globally acclaimed South Korean series Squid Game, this show invites 456 real contestants to compete in a series of children’s games for a staggering cash prize of $4.56 million, with a twist of reality TV drama and interviews in between the games.

In this article, we’ll dive deep into what you need to know about the Squid Game: The Challenge. This includes how it differs from the OG series and the games included in the new series.

What is Squid Game: Challenge?

Produced by Studio Lambert and filmed around London, the show features a diverse cast of participants from various backgrounds, all competing for the largest prize in Netflix history.

Squid Game: Challenge’s Set and Atmosphere

The producers recreated the Squid Game universe on six massive stages, immersing contestants in the experience for 16 days. Participants lived in giant dorms, donned the iconic green tracksuits, and faced the same eerie staircases and masked guards as in the drama.

Unlike the original series, Squid Game: Challenge does not involve actual danger. Instead, a black dye signifies elimination of the player.

The Games

Despite the removal of actual danger in Squid Game: Challenge, the psychological pressure remains high as contestants navigate the games and strategize against each other. There are also trust issues among the players, which we can readily see in the trailer.

The trailer doesn’t provide a detailed list of all the games included, but it does indicate that the iconic elements of the original series carry over to Squid Game: Challenge.

Red Light, Green Light

This is a childhood game with a twist. A massive, lifelike robot doll with sensors acts as the judge. Like in the OG version, the abrupt and unpredictable movements of the doll and the suddenness of the “Red Light” command add to the overall tension in the game.

Players must advance toward a finish line during “Green Light” but freeze in place during “Red Light.” If a player is caught moving after “Red Light” is called, they are eliminated. The game continues until all players either reach the finish line or are eliminated.

Honeycomb (Dalgona) Challenge

In the “Honeycomb Challenge,” players receive a honeycomb candy with a random shape inside. They must delicately carve out the shape without breaking the candy.

Seems easy? Well, it’s not when you get those honeycombs with irregularly shaped indents on the candy, like an umbrella, for example. Add to that they have to do this under time pressure. If a player breaks the shape of the candy while carving, they are eliminated.

Tug-of-War

Two teams of players face off on a suspended platform over a vast drop. It may seem straightforward, but the physical and strategic elements of the game are crucial here.

Teams must pull the opposing team across a designated line to win. If a player on one team releases the rope or is pulled over the line, their team loses.

As seen in the OG Squid Game, the body build of the team members is not the only factor at play here but how they plan to use their collective strength to win the game. In other words, it’s not just about strength but also everyone’s timing and coordination.

Marbles

The “Marbles” game is more of a psychological challenge than a skill-based game. Participants form pairs and engage in various marble games, each with different rules depending on what they agree on. The emphasis is on strategy, negotiation, and the emotional toll of competing against friends.

The goal is to win the marbles of their opponents. The loser (the one without the marbles) is eliminated.

Glass Stepping Stones

“Glass Stepping Stones” involves crossing a bridge made of fragile glass panels suspended above the ground. The catch is you don’t know which panels will make you fall to your loss. The only way to know for sure is when someone decides to go ahead of you.

The Squid Game

The final game is a complex and physically demanding version of the traditional Korean game “Squid,” where the attacker (the “Squid”) attempts to tag defenders while they balance on one leg.

The attacker (the “Squid”) tries to tag the defenders, and the defenders try to prevent this while standing on one leg. The attacker must tag the defenders and progress through specific steps to win. The defenders can fight back and try to push the attacker out of bounds. The game becomes more complex as the number of defenders increases.
