Le gouvernement namibien s’inquiète auprès du roi Philippe des sanctions sur les diamants

La Namibie s’inquiète des sanctions imposées par le G7 pour empêcher l’écoulement des diamants russes sur les marchés. La question a été abordée lors d’une rencontre entre le roi Philippe et le président namibien Nangolo Mbumba.

La Russie représente 30% de la production mondiale de diamants. Le G7 (Allemagne, Canada, États-Unis, France, Italie, Japon et Royaume-Uni) a déjà interdit l’importation de diamants depuis la Russie depuis janvier, mais a récemment étendu les sanctions à ceux provenant de Russie mais travaillés dans un pays tiers.

À partir de septembre, un système de vérification et de certification sera mis en place pour renforcer la traçabilité des pierres. Compte tenu de l’expertise diamantaire belge, les flux de diamants dans ce système passeront donc par notre pays.

La Namibie, tout comme l’Angola et le Botswana, craint que ce système ne nuise à son industrie diamantaire, notamment en faisant grimper les coûts. Le marché du diamant représente 10 % du PIB de la Namibie.

Le président namibien a évoqué cette problématique mardi lors de son discours officiel, à l’occasion de la visite du roi Philippe en Namibie. La décision du G7 de permettre à tous les flux de diamants de passer par la Belgique représente un “risque et une menace graves” pour les économies de la Namibie, de l’Angola et du Botswana, a affirmé Nangolo Mbumba. Il a déclaré compter sur le soutien du Roi et la compréhension du pays.
