Laura Tobin has shed light on how the coronavirus pandemic actually helped to slow down climate change.

Back in March 2020, the entire world came to a complete halt and our lives were changed overnight amid the unprecedented Covid-19 outbreak.

While individuals were isolated from their loved-ones for months on end, and as people were cooped up in their houses working their daily jobs from home, the planet began to heal as less cars were in transport.

Although millions of lives were lost to the Covid pandemic, the planet's heath blossomed as less greenhouse gas emissions were spread due to the fact everyone was forced to stay at home.

In her brand-new book, Every Day Ways To Save The Planet, broadcast meteorologist Laura Tobin, 40, revealed that CO2 emissions are continuing to dwindle thanks to the pandemic.

“Our overall greenhouse gas emissions have been going down over the last two decades,” Laura explained.

“In fact, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the UK's estimated CO2 emissions for 2020 were 10.7% less than in 2019. This is largely due to the reduction in road transport because of lockdowns, and reduced business activity. But even without the pandemic, UK emissions are gradually reducing every year.

“Our total greenhouse gas emissions for 2019 were 43.3% lower than in 1990.

Although UK's greenhouse gas emissions have lessened down through the years, the threat of climate change is still very real.

In her new book, Laura explains that climate change is 'not a future problem', instead, she insists that it's a very real problem that is happening right before our eyes – and it will continue to get worse if we refuse to make every day small changes in our daily life routines.

“Climate change is not something we are fearing in the future, it is something that is already happening now. As Dr William Ripple, Professor of Ecology at Oregon State University, says, “Climate change has arrived and is accelerating faster than many scientists expected,” Laura penned.

“As temperatures soar, there has been an increase in wildfires across the globe, coral reefs are being destroyed, while the melting of glaciers and ice sheets has resulted in sea levels rising.

“All these signs are warnings that if we keep going at the rate we are, things will get worse.”

It comes after Laura opened up about the difficulties she faces each day with the scientific knowledge she holds amid the current climate change crisis.

The ITV star admitted that she can sometimes get bogged down with all the concerning statistics about climate change.

“You have to do what you can do and you can only focus on yourself and the things you can do to make the world a better place,” Laura insisted.

“It is quite stressful knowing all of these statistics, and the more you research it, the more you find – so it can be quite difficult when some people are really trying every single day to be greener and more sustainable. But then you see others who throw their recycling in the wrong bin, or people who don't realise the detrimental effects of food wastage.

Laura says she can sometimes feel overwhelmed when thinking about the effects of climate change

“It sometimes just dawns on me, but then I have to remind myself that only I can change the world around me. By writing this book I hope to encourage people to make small changes – but that's all I can really do.”

Throughout her informative book on climate change, Laura insisted that she will do everything in her power to make the world a better place for her daughter, and hopes that in time, the damage that has been done to the planet can one day be reversed by the actions of people who take being eco-friendly seriously.

Laura Tobin: Everyday Ways To Save Our Planet, RRP £14.99, is out on 7 April and published by Mirror Books.
