Late Late show viewers moved by ‘poignant' and heartwarming' tribute to Tuam babies

Viewers of last night’s Late Late show were moved by a ‘poignant’ and ‘heartwarming’ tribute to the 796 children who tragically lost their lives at the Tuam Mother and Baby Home.

Ryan Tubridy told viewers that he wanted to take the show’s cameras outside so they could see the candles lit outside the studio, one for every baby that died at the Home over four decades ago.

‘796 candles lit for each one of them and lit because Catherine Corless never gave up,’ the show tweeted.

Historian Catherine garnered high praise for her effortless work in uncovering the harrowing events that took place at the Tuam homes and began the investigation that ultimately led to the remains of the babies being uncovered in what was once a septic tank at the Home.

Catherine joined Ryan in the RTE studio alongside her husband Aidan to discuss her relentless work, as well as her brand new book, Belonging: A Memoir.

Offering her thanks to Ryan for the candlelit tribute, Catherine confessed her fears that one day the awful things that happened at the Mother and Baby Homes would be forgotten and called on the government to take action.

‘I know many people in government will be looking in tonight. It’s just to tell them look, those babies are there, they should’ve been taken out in 2017 when they were discovered,’ Catherine said.

‘The will isn’t there, as far as I can see, with the government to get it sorted, to get the babies out. All we’re asking is to take them out of the sewage area because they deserve a burial,’ she added.

After her powerful interview on the show, Catherine was praised on Twitter for all that she has done over the last eight years since her investigation first began.

‘Poignant image of the candles for the 796 beautiful lost souls #RIP Catherine Corless is a decent, kind and generous soul – we owe her ️️️️ #Time4Truth&Justice,’ a viewer tweeted. Powerful image, individual candles placed on a yellow cards, embossed with names of the 796 babies who died

Another person wrote: ‘Catherine Corless is unique in my lifetime. There will be very few like her. Deeply compassionate, a trait that very few think matters. The silent shame of those who wish she might go away, politicians – they will never know a strength such as hers. Such is their shame forever.’

‘Catherine Corless is bravery personified. She will never let us forget. Those babies have been left 4 years now. It’s unthinkable that even with all we know they are still there,’ a Twitter user wrote.

‘Catherine Corless, an ordinary woman who has done extraordinary work. Singlehandedly she has created more awareness about a cruel, inhumane regime than all those reports and investigations. Such a decent woman.’

Irish influencer James Kavanagh even called for Catherine to wither be the next ‘president’ or else ‘crowned Queen.’

I absolutely j’love Miggeldy and think he should be President until he chooses not to be, but my God Catherine Corless should be the next one. Or just crowned Queen. Truly phenomenal woman. #LateLate
