Giants GM addresses Daniel Jones 'buyer’s remorse' report

NFL Network personality Rich Eisen went viral when he reported after the NFL Scouting Combine that the New York Giants are “absolutely done” with quarterback Daniel Jones and have “buyer’s remorse” regarding the four-year contract that Jones signed in March 2023.

According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Giants general manager Joe Schoen strongly denied Eisen’s claim while speaking with reporters on Thursday.

“There’s stuff out there all the time that’s not true,” Schoen directly said.

Since Eisen first offered his original comments, multiple stories have said the Giants likely will escape Jones’ deal next offseason due to concerns related to the two neck injuries and the torn ACL he suffered from the fall of 2021 through the 2023 campaign. Jones earned his contract after he guided the 2022 Giants to a playoff berth and a road postseason victory.

“I’m still confident in Daniel, the way he’s wired, what he showed us in 2022,” Schoen added. “I’ve still got a lot of confidence in Daniel.”

The Giants hold the sixth overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft and are one of several clubs linked with a potential move up the draft order that would allow them to select a top-tier quarterback prospect.

Recent stories have indicated national analysts believe Schoen won’t trade up and also wouldn’t spend pick No. 6 on Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy if McCarthy gets past the fifth selection next Thursday night.

Per Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com and Adam Wells of Bleacher Report, Schoen teased on Thursday the Giants could trade up or down as late as the evening of April 25.

“I don’t think anybody is ready to move right now,” Schoen explained. “I know people are listening. We’ll all do that. I think those exploratory talks will happen here shortly…I think those [trade] conversations will happen over the next 48 to 72 hours. And you’ll get a feel for who is open to moving and who is not.”

For a piece published on Thursday, Austin Mock of The Athletic ranked the Giants roster 30th in the NFL ahead of the draft.

Such takes suggest that acquiring assets by trading down from pick No. 6 is the right move to make for a team that could then land either Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. or Oregon Ducks signal-caller Bo Nix later on in the player-selection process.
