It’s the story behind Mariah’s Christmas classic
Could you even imagine the holiday season without Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’? It’s impossible! The smash hit has been warming everyone’s heart since it was originally released in November 1994. But although you have heard it thousands of time, do you know anything about it? Read on below to discover 10 facts about the festive classic…
Streaming has made it a new number one
‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in December 2021 – 27 years after it was first released. Though it was first released in 1994, the track didn’t first peak number one on the Billboard Hot 100 until 2017. Due to streaming, fans of the Christmas hit also got it to number one in 2019 and 2020.
It has sold millions
Global sales of ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ have now reached 16 million. As as being Mariah’s best-selling song it is the best selling Christmas single by a female artist overall.
An important co-writer
Carey co-wrote the hit holiday song with veteran songwriter Walter Afanasieff, who said in an interview with Billboard that the speed in which they wrote the track is the secret to the song’s success. Walter – whose other hits include ‘Dancing On The Ceiling’, ‘Survivor’ and ‘Time, Love and Tenderness’ – said: “It’s definitely not ‘Swan Lake’. But that’s why it’s so popular, because it’s so simple and palatable!”
It won Mariah a Diamond Award
‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ became the first and only holiday single to earn the RIAA’s Diamond Award, in recognition of 10 million sales and streaming units in the United States. Speaking about the accolade, she said: “The continued love for my song never ceases to amaze me and fill my heart with a multitude of emotions.”
Mariah was only supposed to make a covers album
According to the Amazon Music mini documentary ‘Mariah Carey is Christmas: The story of All I Want for Christmas Is You’, her album ‘Merry Christmas’ was supposed to be a covers record. Then Mariah and Walter penned THAT track and the rest is history…
Mariah didn’t want to make a Christmas LP
In 1994, Christmas albums were perceived to be for older artists whose hit making days were behind them. In his book, ‘Hitmaker: The Man and His Music’, Mariah’s ex-husband and music executive Tommy Mottola recalls her reaction to the festive LP plan. She told him: “What are you trying to do, turn me into Connie Francis?”
Christmas in August
Mariah recorded the vocals for the song in August in the heat of New York City. But to get the Yuletide feeling in middle of the year she covered the studio in Christmas lights and got a tree. Her songwriter partner Walter said: “There was even talk of bringing in some snow at one point, but we didn’t go with that, thank God!”
Mariah and Walter have not made music together since 1997
Despite achieving phenomenal success together, Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff have not worked together since her 1997 LP ‘Butterfly’. Speaking about their estrangement, Walter said: “It’s a shame because we had great chemistry. “My greatest dream is to work with her again. Mariah, all I want for Christmas is you!”
Did you know there’s a film too?
The 2017 animated movie ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ features Mariah herself as a young girl with a wholesome Christmas wish for a puppy. The character’s dream stars after seeing a four-legged furry friend at a pet shop. Simply adorable!
She has made millions from the song
In 2019, Forbes reported that the song had estimated earnings of $60 million in royalties up to that time. Mariah could retire from making music from the earnings she has already made. Please don’t!
Labrinth, 33, was made lead composer on the first season by showrunner Sam Levinson after he offered him the job while he was working on his 2019 album, ‘Imagination & the Misfit Kid’.
Meanwhile, Lana recently admitted music is something she gets to do “in-between” her “poetry and “lovemaking”.
Speaking as she was honoured with the Artist Of The Decade prize at Variety’s Hitmakers awards show in November, she said: “I’ve been very lucky to follow my muse for the last 18 years, since I was 18.
“Sometimes that has taken me super far away from music into other mediums and other job opportunities that have nothing to do with the arts at all.
“I’m very flexible and what I’ve come to understand is that if you follow what you’re interested in, you’ll end up being the most creative in that field.
“Even if you get a 9-5 after you got the decade award, you need to do what feels right.
“I always like to say that the way I live my life is my poetry, my lovemaking is my legacy, and I get to make music in between.”
Lana released two studio albums – ‘Chemtrails over the Country Club’ and ‘Blue Banisters’- in 2021.
