lamar women's golf team wins home tournament in beaumont

Hosting four teams from across the country this week in Beaumont, the Lamar University women’s golf team claimed a tournament victory on its home course.

For the third straight year, the Lamar Cardinal Challenge was won by the home team at Beaumont County Club. Lamar had three players finish in the top 10 individually and won the team competition by six strokes.

The Cardinals entered Tuesday’s final round with a nine-stroke lead, and navigated wet conditions to hold off second-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Midwestern State finished third, followed by Idaho State and Niagara University.

“To win any tournament is such an accomplishment,” Lamar head coach Janell O’Connor said. “To win three years in a row is just special. I’m proud of the team and their fight to the end. The conditions were challenging today for everyone and the girls dug deep and figured out how to get it done. I’m so happy for the seniors to end on a high note at home.”

Lamar graduate senior Alessia Trebbi Tindall, the back-to-back individual champion in Beaumont, nearly pulled off the three-peat during this year’s Cardinal Challenge. Instead, Corpus-Christi’s Lucie Charbonnier made a late charge and took the lead on the final hole to win the individual title.

Trebbi Tindall finished tied for second with a three-round score of 225.

“She worked hard to get herself back into position to win for the third straight year,” O’Connor said of Lamar’s top player. “But I’m proud that she handled herself with grace after a tough ending to the round.”

Lamar now gets a few weeks to prepare for the Southland Conference Women’s Golf Championships, which will be held April 15 to 17 at The Bandit Golf Club in New Braunfels.

“I’m excited that we are moving in the right direction as we gear up for conference,” O’Connor said.
