Gonzalo Montiel is forced off in Nottingham Forest’s FA Cup win over Bristol City

Nottingham Forest will be without defender Gonzalo Montiel for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United.

The Argentine was forced off in the final minutes of the Reds’ FA Cup replay win over Bristol City on Wednesday night. He is set to undergo a scan on a hamstring problem this evening but has been ruled out of the match with the Magpies.

Meanwhile, Forest will make a late check on Morgan Gibbs-White after the exertions of the midweek fourth round tie. The attacker was hobbling around the City Ground pitch during extra-time but did appear to be moving more freely towards the end and was able to to take a spot-kick during the shootout.

“It was a tough game. We went to extra-time and played a lot of minutes, especially for players who have not been involved recently,” head coach Nuno Espirito Santo said.

“We have some knocks and some situations that cause problems. We have Gonzalo out, he is not going to be involved tomorrow, and some players have issues that we still have to assess.

“Gonzalo felt something in his hamstring on a run in the last minutes before we took him off. He felt some discomfort. He will have the scan at 7pm today. He is not available for tomorrow, but we will have to wait and see.”

On Gibbs-White, Nuno added: “He had some pain and discomfort. We still have to assess him.”

January signings Matz Sels, Gio Reyna and Rodrigo Ribeiro were ineligible to feature against the Robins, while midfielders Ryan Yates and Nicolas Dominguez were suspended. The quintet are all available for Saturday but Nuno is still without Ola Aina, Ibrahim Sangare and Willy Boly as the trio are on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Additionally, Chris Wood is sidelined with a hamstring issue. The striker faces up to two months out of action.

“He is getting better and is having treatment every day,” Nuno said. “But he is not available for tomorrow.”
