Saffron has been shown to improve function of the eyes, especially the retina. It has also been shown to provide neuroprotective effects. This is mainly due to the presence of phytochemicals such as carotenoids which is what provides the spice its deep rich dark colour. The natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity has shown in studies to help slow progression of eye related conditions such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. Consuming up to 1 – 2g of saffron each day can be beneficial in maintaining good eye health.

A recent study came to the conclusion that turmeric has a hypotensive effect on Glaucoma. None of the participants experienced any side effects and the effects were seen after 3 weeks of treatment at doses of 30 mg/day. More studies are needed to confirm this treatment with certainty, but as there is no side effect at these doses, the treatment is already valid.
