TMC To Face Rebellion? Senior Leader Kunal Ghosh Drops Party Identity From Social Media Profile

Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, who has been criticised by the BJP over its handling of the Sandeshkhali issue, might suffer a big setback as senior party leader Kunal Ghosh has sparked speculations of a rebellion after he dropped his TMC identity from his social media handle. Ghosh, the party spokesman and West Bengal General Secretary has also accused a section of the leadership of “selfishly indulging in factionalism”.

Dropping all references to the TMC in his X (formerly Twitter) bio, Ghosh has described himself as a social activist and journalist. The senior TMC leader, who has been making all the statements regarding the party’s stand on the Sandeshkhali issue, also put up an X post accusing a section of the Trinamool Congress leadership of being incapable and selfish, without naming anyone in particular.

“The leader is incapable, selfish, indulging in factionalism and will resort to immorality throughout the year. After winning elections because of the sentiments of the common Trinamool Congress workers over Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, he will again start serving self-interest. This cannot happen again and again,” Ghosh posted on X.

According to a report by IANS, quoting TMC sources, Ghosh in his post has targetted an influential leader from North Kolkata and he has been at loggerheads with him for quite some time now. The report further stated that Ghosh has gone incommunicado and has not been taking any calls from the media.

Recently, Ghosh had been in the news for claiming that certain administrative actions on the part of the state government and police were making his task as the party spokesman difficult. However, even amid extreme tension with a section of the Trinamool Congress leadership, Ghosh had never deleted his political identity from his social media profile.

Sandeshkhali Issue:

The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday commended the arrest of Shajahan Sheikh, a party leader accused of torturing villagers in trouble-torn Sandeshkhali, attributing it to the court’s facilitation of legal action and accused the opposition of exploiting the previous embargo on his arrest. In contrast, the BJP dismissed Sheikh’s arrest as contrived, asserting that he had been under the protective custody of the West Bengal Police.

Sheikh, facing allegations of sexual misconduct and land encroachment in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali, was apprehended on Thursday morning, police said. The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed that Sheikh can be arrested by the CBI, the ED or the West Bengal Police. On Monday, the high court directed police to arrest Sheikh, following which the TMC asserted that it does not shield culprits and he would be arrested within seven days.

On Thursday evening, TMC’s chief spokesperson Derek O’Brien announced the party’s decision to suspend Sheikh for six years, underscoring their unwavering stance against malfeasance.
