Erik ten Hag could remain at Manchester United next season, despite failing to convince the club’s board that he’s the right man to take them forward.

The Dutchman has faced increased scrutiny over his position since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s partial takeover in January.

Ratcliffe has quickly assembled a new team at Old Trafford at board level, with Omar Berrarda soon to be joined by Jason Wilcox and Dan Ashworth.

Sir Dave Brailsford is conducting an audit of the club, and is the most hands-on of the INEOS personnel involved with the club.

United picked up just two points from their last three matches, throwing away leads against Brentford, Chelsea and Liverpool.

It’s left the Red Devils with an uphill task to qualify for the Champions League, and a failure to do so will tighten further the strict financial restrictions on the club.

That could set back Ratcliffe’s three-year plan to take United back to the top of English and European football.

But the short-term feeling is that Ten Hag has not done enough to convince the club’s board that he is the man to take them forward.

Ratcliffe will delegate a decision over Ten Hag’s future to Ashworth and Wilcox, and he would rather not sack a manager during his first summer at the club.

But, as well as the financial compensation it would take to fire Ten Hag, there is another problem in that there’s a shortage of top class available managers, according to ESPN.

Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Barcelona are already looking for new managers, and are ahead of United in their search to do so.

United could therefore be behind the rest of the pack, and that could see Ten Hag remain to see out the final year of his deal at Old Trafford.
