WWE has released SmackDown star Kevin Patrick from his contract.

The company has decided to part ways with the announcer, who had been appearing alongside colour commentator Corey Graves on the blue brand each week.

As reported by PWInsider, Irishman Patrick – real name Kevin Egan – will no longer be handled duties as the company looks to go in a new direction.

It’s said veteran commentator Michael Cole – who appears every week on Monday Night Raw alongside Wade Barrett – will join Graves for tomorrow night’s episode of SmackDown before the Royal Rumble.

The outlet said: ‘While Patrick was liked personally, there had been a feeling for some time that he was not the right person for the role.’

It’s thought he was planning to travel to SmackDown for this week’s broadcast, suggesting the decision was a fairly last minute one.

It’s not yet known who will take over from Patrick on a permanent basis, particularly after the recent shift to two-person announce teams meaning Cole is unlikely to pull double duty on a regular basis.

The departing star first joined WWE in March 2021 as a backstage interviewer while also appearing on Kickoff panels for the company’s monthly premium live events.

In October 2022, he was promoted to lead commentator on Monday Night Raw, before moving to SmackDown last year.

He is yet to comment on the release publicly.

As it stands, Cole and Barrett remain the Raw commentary team, and Cole will join Graves – his co-commentator for PLEs like the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania – on this week’s SmackDown.

One possible contender for Patrick’s now vacant SmackDown position is Vic Joseph, who sits alongside Hall of Famer Booker T every week on NXT.
