Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: The National High Speed Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL) announced on Tuesday that work has commenced on the bullet train project in Maharashtra’s Palghar and Thane districts. This marks a step forward for the 508-km-long Mumbai Ahmedabad corridor.

According to a press release by NHSRCL, the ongoing work is part of package-C3 of the bullet train project, which spans from Shilphata to Zaroli village on the Maharashtra-Gujarat border. The geotechnical investigation for the entire 135 km stretch is nearing completion. Additionally, construction has begun on two mountain tunnels in the region, while pier foundation work is underway at multiple locations.

To facilitate the project, casting yards are being developed for the full span and segment casting of girders. Package C-3 of the bullet train project covers a length of 135.45 km and includes 24.027 km of viaducts and bridges, along with 5.361 km of earth structures. It also comprises 36 bridges and crossings, including 12 steel bridges, as stated by NHSRCL.

Mumbai Ahmedabad Corridor Features 6 Mountain Tunnel

The project features six mountain tunnels and one cut-and-cover tunnel, along with crucial river crossings over Ulhas, Vaitarna, and Jagani rivers, according to the press release. The construction of three bullet train stations at Thane, Virar, and Boisar is also planned for this section.

India’s First Undersea Tunnel

Additionally, NHSRCL has started the construction of India’s first undersea tunnel, which will span 21 km between the underground stations at Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai and Shilphata in Thane district. The tunnel work involves the use of three boring machines, with approximately 16 km being constructed using this method and the remaining 5 km utilising the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).

Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor Cost

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor project carries a total cost of Rs 1.08 lakh crore. As per the shareholding pattern, the Government of India will contribute Rs 10,000 crore to NHSRCL, while the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra will each contribute Rs 5,000 crore. The remaining funding will be provided by Japan through a loan with an interest rate of 0.1 percent, the press release confirmed.
