Philadelphia Eagles GM Howie Roseman is at it again, working aggressively to sign up another star – in this case, a hoped-for deal to extend DeVonta Smith.
Philadelphia is putting together a new contract for Smith that some say could exceed $25 million APY
Smith is under contract through 2024 at a base salary of just over $1 million. … a bargain, of course. Philly could play this “cheap” and sit on that deal, and also simply before May 2 exercise the fifth-year option on Smith’s rookie deal. That would lock him in at $16 million for the 2025 season … also a bargain.
But proactivity is the name of the game for Roseman, and it’s about to work for Smith, the 10th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, who has recorded 240 catches for 3,178 yards and 19 touchdowns over three seasons with Philadelphia.
Contrary to popular opinion, “proactive” doesn’t always work. Not every player lives up to his contract. But Smith seems like a smart bet – the sort of which Roseman seems to make a lot of.
