School Calendar: When does the first term in 2024 start and end?

As students transition from their holiday break, the 2024 school calendar takes a pivotal step. It clearly delineates the start and end dates for the first term.

This establishes a structured beginning to the academic year, setting the tone for a focused and engaging learning experience.

Set to begin on 17 January, the first term signifies the initiation of the academic year. It concludes on 20 March.

South Africa implements unified school term structure

This uniformity in term structure, applicable across all public schools in South Africa, represents a departure from previous practices, aiming to standardise educational timelines on a national scale.

Presented by the Department of Basic Education, the 2024 school calendar ensures a consistent framework for both inland and coastal provinces.

Parents and students welcome this departure from past distinctions in holiday schedules, providing a streamlined and predictable academic schedule.

How many weeks does Term 1 consist of?

Term 1 of the 2024 academic year is designed to span 10 weeks, encompassing a total of 48 school days. Notably, there are no public holidays during this term.

On the other hand, Gauteng Department of Education shared when Gauteng public schools will officially reopen for 2024.

“Gauteng public schools will officially reopen for Term 1 on Wednesday, 17 January 2024,” said the Gauteng Education.
