Kin on Netflix: Ultimate guide to the Irish crime drama as season 3 rumours grows

Kin fans all over are rejoicing as the hit crime drama has landed on Netflix, with one star even hopeful this might give the show the boost in viewings it needs for a third season.

The gritty RTÉ thriller is one of the most successful shows to come out of Ireland, with almost 600,000 people tuning in to the nail-biting second season finale, the last episode of the series to be released to date.

Despite its popularity, doubts have been cast on the return of a third season, something fans all over Ireland, and now the world as it grows in popularity from Netflix, irrespective of any doubts, some stars of the show do remain hopeful of a third season.

Whether you are a die-hard Kin fan getting ready for your fifth rewatch, or you are a first-time Kin viewer getting ready to get stuck into the series for the first time, here is everything you need to know about Kin, from where to watch – and if we will see a third season.

How can I watch Kin on Netflix or other streaming services?

Among a slew of other hit shows landing on the streaming giant, the award-winning crime drama landed on Netflix home screens on May 1, meaning anyone with a subscription to the service can sit back and enjoy the whole first season of the hit show.

If you don’t have a subscription to Netflix, thankfully you can catch up on all of the Kinsellas’ escapades on RTÉ Player where both seasons, all 16 whopper episodes, have lived since their initial release.

The show also recently received a boost when the second season arrived on BBC Player in February, becoming one of the top five most-watched shows on the streaming site the week of its release.

Could there be a season three on the horizon?

There has been a huge amount of speculation around a potential third season of the hit crime show, and while Kin’s die-hard fans are praying for a return, things don’t look too hopeful.

In February, reports emerged that Kin would not return to screens for a third season as the main actors’ contracts were said to have finished up.

Turkish-Irish actor Sinan Sicimoglu, who starred in Kin as Teller, the owner of a pawn shop used by the Dublin crime family to launder their money, opened up about the devastating news.

The star told The Irish Sun: “It’s the end of the Kinsellas because all the main actors signed three-year contracts in 2020 to appear in Kin, but it’s now 2024 and those contract have run out.

At the IFTAs on April, Clare Dunne, who plays Kinsella matriarch Amanda, shared thoughts on a possible third season, revealing that she hasn’t heard of any plans to film new episodes.

Dunne said: “If it came back again I would be delighted. But if it doesn’t then we just have to count our blessings of what we had. Either way, it’s going to be okay.”

The most recent revelation came when Jimmy Kinsella actor Emmett J. Scanlan shared to the Irish Sun that he “genuinely” doesn’t have an update on the show’s fate, following comments he made at the IFTAs stating he is hoping that by airing on Netflix, it could reach a bigger audience – driving the possibility of a new season.

For those just about to watch the show, what is Kin actually about?

The Irish crime series follows the lives of the fictional Dublin family the Kinsellas as they become embroiled in a gangland war. When a member of the Kinsella clan is killed, the family embark on a gangland war with an international cartel, a war that is impossible to win.

Out-numbered, out-financed and out-gunned – the Kinsellas find themselves holed up in their Dublin stronghold while their businesses fail, and family members and associates are picked off. But they have something the cartel does not, the unbreakable bonds of blood and family.

Starring the likes of Clare Dunne, Charlie Cox, Aidan Gillen, Ciarán Hinds and Sam Keeley, the show has received a spate of awards and is recognised as one of the top crime shows by fans and critics alike.
