In the most recent series of crash tests conducted by the Global New Assessment Programme (GNCAP), the Kia Carens MPV received a 3-star rating for both adult and child passenger safety.
The India-specific Kia Carens MPV was tested in its most basic safety specification, fitted with two airbags at the front, two side-body airbags and two side head protection airbags. Another common fit in this specification is ESC. The Kia Carens passed the UN95 regulation standard and underwent side-impact testing as well.
The MPV, which has six airbags as standard equipment, only received 9.30 out of a possible 17 points for adult occupant safety. The earned 30.99 out of a possible 49 points in the evaluation of kid safety.
The Kia Carens revealed an unstable construction, mediocre protection for the driver’s chest, and inadequate protection for the driver’s feet throughout the inspection. Global NCAP highlighted that the vehicle is still offered with a lap rather than a three-point seatbelt in the back central seating position.
Alejandro Furas, Secretary-General of Global NCAP said, “Global NCAP welcomes Kia’s decision to make six airbags a standard fit in the Carens ahead of a regulatory requirement. However, we expected a better performance from this model. It remains a cause for concern that global brands such as Kia, that normally achieve 5 star ratings in other markets, are still not reaching this level in India.
