Fifty Per Cent Off: Flagship TWS, now at a much lower price

android, fifty per cent off: flagship tws, now at a much lower price

Galaxy Buds2

When Samsung launched the Galaxy Buds 2 in August 2021 at Rs 11,999, they were hailed as being one of the best value-for-money TWS anyone with an Android phone could get. Well, two and a half years down the line, those buds are now available for almost half their price – at between Rs 6,000 – Rs 6,500, and they are even more crazy value for money.

Still looking good and easy to use

Galaxy Buds2

Galaxy Buds 2 still has a very premium and polished look (Express Photo)

They might be getting a little long in their tech teeth, but the Galaxy Buds 2 still have got a very premium and polished look about them. The buds are slightly curvy and egg-shaped and are totally in-ear ones, with no stems, and all the touch controls on the buds themselves. They are comfortable fits, with ear tip size options available in the box (and an ear fit test on the app as well), and at 5 grams, can be worn for long periods, without any problems. We would recommend inserting them firmly in your ear and using the right ear tip sizes, though, as they can fall out otherwise. They are a little large in size and will be visible in our ears, but they definitely do not look bad.

Controls are simple – a tap to play or pause a track, a double tap tap to play the next track or take or end a call, and a triple tap to go to the previous track. Long press is configured by default to control ANC, but this can be customised separately for each ear, letting you use it to summon Bixby, control volume or summon Spotify.

The buds come in that typically squarish oval (‘squoval’) case that marks the Galaxy Buds range. The case is very compact and weighs a little over 45 grams even with the buds inside (the buds themselves are just 5 grams each), and can be easily kept in a pocket without any unseemly bulges. Our only concern is that the glossy finish gets smudged after a bit of use. The buds come with an IPX2 rating, which means that while they cannot be taken swimming, they are definitely good enough for gym workouts. All in all, there is everything flagship and nothing 2021 about their appearance and design.

Great at delivering sound, good at shutting it out too

Galaxy Buds2

Galaxy Buds 2 comes with very impressive volume level and clarity (Express Photo)

That applies to their performance too. The Galaxy Buds 2 comes with a very impressive volume level and clarity. They have a slight bass accent but you can tweak it by choosing one of the presets that come in the app. We would recommend getting the bass-friendly preset as it is there that the Buds 2 really shine. They are great for those who love gaming and watching action films, and clarity levels are super for podcasts too. Call quality is very good indeed, and well above anything you will get at close to Rs 6,500. That also goes for active noise cancelling- the Galaxy Buds 2 can easily drown out the sounds of regular traffic and the chit-chat of a busy cafe. No, these are not as good as the AirPods Pro or their Galaxi Buds 2 Pro siblings in terms of ANC, but they punch well above their new price. As these are premium TWS, you get a truckload of high-end features and sensors. There is a transparency mode on the buds, allowing you to hear external sounds when you wish, and taking a bud out pauses the audio playing. You also get wireless charging support, which is a little rare at its (new) price point.

Galaxy Buds2

Galaxy Buds2 recently gained AI features with software update (Express Photo)

It is not all roses, though. The 4-5 hour battery life of the Buds 2 was good in 2021, but is a little on the low side today, although the case provides 3 complete recharges. Also, while the Buds 2 can switch between different connected devices easily, they do not have multi-point connectivity at the time of writing. Finally, the touch-based interface is simple, but the surface of the buds is so sensitive that we found ourselves accidentally executing commands even while adjusting the buds in our ears, and actually even switched off touch controls after a while. The Buds 2 also works discernibly better in terms of audio quality when paired with Samsung devices, although they are very good with other Android phones too. Interestingly, there is no iPhone app for them, so you will miss out on some functionality customising controls, ear tip tests and so on) if you use them with an iPhone. That said, we would still recommend them for iPhone users, based on their audio and call quality.

In fact, given their performance in terms of audio quality, ANC and calls, we would say that the Galaxy Buds 2 are perhaps the best flagship TWS you can get for not too much money today. What’s more, with Samsung constantly updating their software and also promising to bring its Galaxy AI features to them in the coming days, these are perhaps THE TWS to get if you have a budget in the vicinity of Rs 6,000! They remain as flagship as ever, even at almost fifty per cent off in terms of price.
