Chelsea picked up a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace on Monday night but there were injury concerns over Thiago Silva and Malo Gusto after both defenders were substituted.

Palace went ahead through Jefferson Lerma but a Conor Gallagher double and a late Enzo Fernandez third gave the Blues a much needed win.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side climbed to 10th with the three points, still in the hunt for European football, while the Eagles remained 15th, just five points above the relegation zone.

It was a good night out for the west London team on the other side of town, but Silva had to go off just after the hour mark, while Gusto was replaced on 84 minutes.

While Gusto does not seem like he will be out for long, if at all, the veteran Brazilian’s groin issue could be more serious.

‘We need to assess Thiago Silva tomorrow because he felt something in his groin,’ Pochettino said.

‘Malo, I think, was tired, but it’s not going to be a big problem to be ready at the weekend.’

Chelsea go to Manchester City on Saturday in the Premier League so will hope they have as many players available as possible for the toughest test in the division.

Pochettino is already missing a string of defenders through injury, with Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Benoit Badiashille and Marc Cucurella all out.

He does have Gallagher available, though, and he was delighted with his performance on Monday night against the club which gave him the chance to shine on loan a couple of seasons ago.

‘[Conor] is a player with a great commitment to the team and he tries to compensate in an offensive and defensive position, and that is priceless. I’m so happy for him and the team because it’s an important three points,’ said the Blues boss.

‘Conor was always the player that arrived before the second line with the possibility to score. Conor is a player who loves to run and use the freedom to play when we have the ball.

‘He is very consistent in dropping back and helping the team in a defensive situation as well. I think he is a player who has been doing a fantastic job since the beginning of the season.’
