Kerala HC sends notice to Centre over Renjith Maheshwary's Arjuna Award petition

Olympian Renjith Maheshwary’s petition challenging a press release issued by the secretary of the Department of Sports rescinding the Arjuna award conferred to him in 2013 has been admitted in the Kerala High Court.

Justice Nagaresh admitted the plea and issued notice to the Department of Sports.

Maheshwary, 36, was pulled out of the list of recipients due to over allegations of doping. The 36-year-old triple jumper claims to have only received the information verbally from the secretary to the Sports Department just before the function was set to begin at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in 2013. He was asked to withdraw from the ceremony.

The athlete further claims to have had not been aware of the said doping charges or the resultant punishment.

According to the sports department, Maheshwary faced doping charges during 2008-2009 period and was punished with a ban. The department further claims he faced the charge while he was taking part in 46th National Athletic Championship held in Kochi, which is factually wrong. The 46th championship was held in New Delhi. Kochi was the venue of the 48th championship.

Maheshwary also points out that the Director of the National Dope Testing Laboratory who conducted the analysis of the sample was not accredited back in 2008. Subsequently, when they got accredited in 2009, they had published a list of sportspersons who were found to have used prohibited drugs and the list did not have his name in it.
