A motorist in Co Kildare has been arrested under suspicion for driving under the influence after Gardaí noticed a pint in the car’s cup holder.
Gardaí in Celbridge in North Co Kildare were out on patrol in the early hours of Monday morning, February 19, when they spotted a car being driven erratically. The driver was swerving the car between lanes on the N4 when Gardaí pulled them over.
Once the car was stopped, Gardaí discovered a pint sitting in the vehicle’s cup holder.
Attending Gardaí posted the incident and picture of the culprit’s car on An Garda Síochána’s official @GardaTraffic account on X (formerly known as Twitter) and described the situation “as a close call”.
“Gardaí in Celbridge were on patrol in the early hours when they spotted this car swerving between lanes on the N4. A close call. They pulled in the car and saw a pint in the cup holder, the driver was arrested under suspicion of intoxicated driving. #SaferRoads,” read the post.
The driver was subsequently arrested at the scene under suspicion of drunken driving and brought to a Garda Station in the Kildare region to take a urine/blood sample to determine whether the driver was in fact intoxicated.
This incident comes shortly after 161 drivers were arrested by Gardaí during the St. Brigid’s Day Bank Holiday Weekend Road Safety Enforcement Operations.
Between 7am on Thursday February 1 and 7am, Tuesday February 6, over 4,780 roadside drug and alcohol tests were conducted, which resulted in 161 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
