Grammy award-winning artist Katy Perry is no stranger to the stage – but people across Liverpool have known what she was capable of from the very start.
Back in November 2008, the quirky singer was the surprise choice to
host the MTV Europe Music Awards at the Echo Arena.
The superstar, born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, won over the crowd that star-studded night with her catchy pop tunes and larger than life costumes.

At the awards she was also named the Best New Act, after her breakthrough first single I Kissed a Girl.
Nearly 13 years later, the mum has a host of hits and television appearances under her belt and is set to start a Las Vegas residency at the end of the year.
With over a dozen costume changes between her arrival and the end of the night, Katy wowed fans and opened the awards singing her hit I Kissed A Girl.
Many will remember her iconic outfits during the performance, which saw Katy open the show dressed in an American footballer’s kit and riding a giant lip balm.
Other larger than life costumes that night included a multi-coloured carousel themed dress and a pink feathered playsuit spelling Katy in shining silver letters.
Other awards presented that night included Britney Spears for Best Act and Best Album and Sir Paul McCartney, who also received the Ultimate Legend Award from Bono.
Not long after hosting the EMA’s, Katy Perry was a guest on The Paul O’Grady Show and spoke of her performance and time in Liverpool.
In the interview, Katy said: “It’s very nice, the people are very nice. I went out one evening I went out to this place called ‘Pinks’ and got accosted by a couple of queens themselves.
“It was very fun and it’s nice just to walk into a place they go ‘what you doing here.’

“It was very nice and of course the EMA’s were amazing. I mean I’m only a few months into my career and they give me so much responsibility.”
Since her first appearance on Merseyside, the Roar singer has over the years returned to Liverpool touring and has continued to show her love for the city.
In 2014, she returned for a spectacular performance as part of her Prismatic World Tour.
The ECHO previously reported how she asked the crowd if they were Liverpoolians, before being taught by the crowd: “Scouzer? Oh, Scouser? You are Scousers?”
She also celebrated being in the city by joining in with a verse of Hey Jude and ordering a half pint from the Liverpool Organic Brewery, but lost Scouse points by calling the Mersey “a body of water” she’d glimpsed out of the arena window.
She later told the crowd: “I always come back to Liverpool because you supported me from the start. I love you, Liverpool.”
In 2018, Paul Culshaw, from Crosby, showed his moves on stage at the Echo Arena after being challenged to a dance-off by the US pop star.
Paul was invited to the stage by Katy to take part in a basketball competition, with the loser having to dance in front of an audience of thousands.
