Streetly Balti in Sutton Coldfield, 45 minutes from Coventry
A popular Indian takeaway located 45 minutes from Coventry has been named as one of the best in the Midlands after ’30 years of winning nothing’. Streetly Balti, located on Chester Road in Sutton Coldfield first opened in 1993 serving diners ‘regional Indian delicacies’ and ‘contemporary Indian dishes’.
The family-run restaurant is run by the youngest brother Shahab Uddin with the help of his sons who are originally from Sylhet in Bangladesh. They have created a restaurant with a contemporary feel and a menu that is described as ‘simplistic’ but ‘mouthwatering’ so diners will have an ‘experience they will never forget’.
The restaurant invites guests to experience depths of flavour and historical accuracy of sourced ingredients like no other. The most popular dishes are railway gosht, a slow mutton-cooked dish with a rich, dark, and aromatic sauce, chicken patia (their take on sweet and sour), and Goan fish with a creamy and slightly coconutty sauce.
Streetly, which only has seven tables, was named Best Indian Takeaway in the Midlands for the second year running at the Euro Asia Curry Awards, which was first won at the end of 2022. Days later, they won Restaurant and Takeaway of the Year at the Prestige Curry Awards. Previously, they were also nominated in the Curry Awards and were finalists in the Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards in 2022.
Speaking to BirminghamLive, Shahab said that they wanted an ‘Instagrammable’ restaurant so when the pandemic came and the restaurant was closed, they decided to switch it up.
“For 30 years we have been a busy restaurant but never been up for any awards. Nothing ever happened like that. We were a typical Balti restaurant for 30 years. But more and more people were going out and posting on sites after Covid. And we wanted an Instagrammable restaurant.
“We were closed for nine months. So we changed the colour scheme around and made it brighter and a more fun-loving place. We used to serve food in metal woks and now we plate it up. I said to the staff and my sons ‘when the customers come back I want them to say ‘wow’ at the bottom of the stairs, ‘wow’ at the top of the stairs, and ‘wow’ when the food comes out. And that’s what happened.
The intimate eatery has retained its number one spot out of 133 restaurants in Sutton Coldfield on Tripadvisor, with a 5 star rating and a Traveller’s Choice Award, with food rated a 5/5, service 5/5, value 5/5 and atmosphere 4.5/5, as well as a 4.6 star rating on Google reviews.
Lee said: “Just great food, the menu is not the generic one you see in most Indian/Bangladesh restaurants, which it to their credit. There are also things on offer that are not on the menu, (the generic meals if you want them), plus home-style cooking like their biryani or staff meat, both of which are highly recommended.”
Ian J said: “Food was great, the vegetarian range offered some things different to the normal. My aubergine and potato dish was full of flavour. Our waiter, Saif was an absolute treasure. Will be back.”
Alamin Miah added: “What can I say about this place. Hidden gem of Streetly. Streetly Balti has amazed me. The food is authentic with a modern twist, which was amazing. The freshness and quality of the food in a commercial place was very surprising.
“The food tasted like recipes that are made by the loved ones at home, replicated at Streetly Balti. Shahab and his son make sure the experience in Streetly Balti is always to be remembered. Shahab is very knowledgeable about his menu and knows what dish will be right for you. His customer service and hospitality are highly regarded. Check out this hidden gem, they surely won’t disappoint.”
