German cyclist Lennard Kämna hopes to continue his career next year after an inserted break. Kämna (25) decided to temporarily leave the peloton at the end of May, partly due to mental problems. He will make his comeback in the Cape Epic mountain bike race in South Africa from Sunday.
,,I want to try to get back to my old level. That will be a long road, a lot of work awaits me. But I know I can do it,” said Kämna, considered a great talent at Team Sunweb in the past, in an interview with Weser Kurier newspaper.

As an explanation for his mental problems, Kämna mentions, among other things, the lack of balance in his head during setbacks. ,,I often didn’t handle the time that I had to get out of my tunnel as a performance athlete. The difference became too great between the periods when I trained focused and the time when I was forced to do nothing.” Kämna struggled to find happiness in and out of his sport in the hard times. “I’ve been living wrong,” he concluded.
Kämna exchanged Sunweb for Bora-hansgrohe in 2020 and immediately won stages in the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Tour de France. “But even then it hardly gave me a good feeling. Over the past few months, spending a lot of time with friends and family has made me realize that I’ve missed those happy moments. I now want to experience that feeling in my sport.”
