Ahead of playing an arena show in Philadelphia, Kacey Musgraves surprised fans with an impromptu performance at a local bar on Monday, according to Billboard.
Musgraves took a break from her “star-crossed: unveiled” headlining tour, which kicked off earlier this month, and popped into Tavern on Camac, a gay bar in the Philly area, according to a video posted by Instagram user @gayborhoodfamous. With a pianist by her side and surrounded by floating heart decorations, Musgraves sang a cover of the Fleetwood Mac hit “Dreams” to an enthusiastic crowd.
“Thunder only happens when it’s raining,” Musgraves crooned the lyrics to the iconic chorus. “Players only love you when they’re playing. Say, women, they will come and they will go.”
“kacey musgraves playing at a small gay bar in philly just proves she knows her fan base,” @skurtains wrote.
Twitter user @peterjmarshall was devastated he missed out on seeing Musgraves, despite being at Tavern earlier that night.
“perhaps the biggest tragedy yet: I was at a bar for 3 hours last night and JUST found out Kacey Musgraves went there and sang right after I left,” the user wrote.
Musgraves’ appearance at a gay bar shouldn’t come as a surprise given the country-pop singer’s LGBTQ advocacy. Her 2013 song “Follow Your Arrow” features an embrace of queer identity: “So, make lots of noise, kiss lots of boys, or kiss lots of girls if that’s somethin’ you’re into.” Musgraves previously told Billboard that having this inclusivity in her music is important given her changed stance on the LGBTQ community after moving to Nashville.
“I made tons of gay friends and started going to the few gay clubs we have in town,” Musgraves said at the time. “It started to enrage me that I’d had some previous misunderstanding about a group of people that I now love so much and have so much in common with. As I got deeper into the country community I realized how many still felt the need to hide their identities.
“Country music has always been a genre built on songs and stories celebrating real life so I took it upon myself to include my own awakening into my music and knew that I would be taking some heat for it.”
Musgraves’ “star-crossed: unveiled” tour is in support of the Grammy-winning singer’s 2021 album “star-Ccrossed,” which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and spawned the top 20 country single “Justified.”
