Wetherspoons will close a County Durham venue for the next three months for ‘remedial works’.

The Company Row in Consett will close in mid-March for approximately three months, the pub chain said, while work is carried out.

A spokesperson said the work was needed due to the pub’s “location over historic mine workings”.

Wetherspoons’ Eddie Gershon told the Echo: “Due to its location over historic mine workings, remedial works are planned to The Company Row, which, unfortunately, will involve the closure of the pub for approximately three months from mid-March.

“Wetherspoon apologises to customers for the inconvenience.”

The pub first opened in 2002 following a £1.6m development project, the Echo reported at the time.

A year later a row erupted after it emerged the land where the pub and a Cantonese restaurant were built had been sold by the then-district council under the proviso it wouldn’t be used for alcohol consumption.
