Spencer Strider undergoes Tommy John surgery
The Atlanta Braves provided an update on injured starter Spencer Strider Saturday and the news is not good. Strider underwent Tommy John surgery Friday with Dr. Keith Meister performing the surgery. He will miss the remainder of the 2024 season. Strider underwent an internal brace procedure which could lesson the recovery time.
Strider struggled in the home opener last Friday and said after the game that he was battling a sore elbow. The Braves sent him for an MRI which revealed damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He traveled to Texas Monday to visit Dr. Meister for further evaluation. The Braves held off on providing an update, which would have been unlikely had the news been good.
Strider led the majors in strikeouts last season and came into 2024 among the favorites to win the NL Cy Young Award. Replacing him will be an impossible task for Atlanta and will put their depth to the test early. It also puts more pressure on the rest of the rotation to stay healthy, but also pitch well.
Allan Winans made the first start in place of Strider Thursday. Bryce Elder, Darius Vines and others will likely be in the mix before the season is over.
