Jurgen Klopp honestly admits he hasn't played Liverpool star enough this season
Jurgen Klopp suggested he has not played Harvey Elliott enough this season, after the Liverpool midfielder produced a sensational performance against Tottenham.
Elliott shone for the Reds as he grabbed one goal and one assist during their 4-2 victory over Spurs at Anfield. The 21-year-old laid the ball on a plate for Cody Gakpo to score their third, before getting his name on the scoresheet, superbly curling the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box.
He was rewarded with the Player of the Match award following an inspired display, but Klopp admitted he may have not utilised him enough this campaign. The England Under 21 international has started just nine Premier League matches this season, with most of his minutes coming in other competitions.
In fact, Elliott played more minutes in the Europa League and Carabao Cup than he has in the top-flight this season. He has scored four times and provided nine assists in 51 appearances in total and is slowly becoming a more important member of the squad as the season goes on.
When asked if Klopp is looking forward to watching Elliott progress from afar, he replied: “Oh yes. That’s the typical thing. Did Harvey Elliott play enough this season? I’m not sure. That’s up to me, it’s a little bit of moments like this and he was outstanding, outstanding and he has to be as dominant as he was today.
“Fantastic player, what a goal. I love it. All good. I will watch that definitely and enjoy it.”
Meanwhile, Elliott admitted he might speak to Klopp over his lack of game time near the end of the season, but did reaffirm he is “very grateful” for the opportunities he has given him over the years.

“I’m not really one to do that really,” Elliott told Sky Sports. “It is my dream to go out and play football, especially in a Liverpool shirt. The games I don’t start, I’m upset and annoyed but I’m here for the team to make sure that when I come on, I make the impact and if I start, I make the impact.
“Maybe we can have that conversation towards the end but as I said, I’m just honoured and I’m just very grateful for all opportunities he has gave me.”
After a mini-blip in form, victory for Liverpool is a much-needed blip as they reignite their very slim hopes of winning the Premier League. The Reds sit four points behind second-place Manchester City and five adrift of leaders Arsenal, though City do have a game in hand in the title race.
